Over the past few months, my darling wife S, who is also my business partner, and I have been working on a few rather exciting projects.
One of them is the creation and development of a new Modern Asian restaurant for a boutique hotel in Penang, Malaysia. We had the good fortune of being introduced […]
One of the things that my darling wife S finds most amusing about me is that I’m highly susceptible to suggestion. If I see something in a magazine, book, movie or on television, I feel this ridiculous and inexplicable urge to taste it, buy it or at the very least see it in person. […]
One of my favourite foods in the world is mentaiko pasta. It’s a dish I’ve written about previously on more than one occasion. When I first tasted the dish quite a few years ago, at the house of a Japanese friend of mine, finding mentaiko pasta on a restaurant menu was a rarity. There was, […]
It seems like all the dogs in my life are currently not in the pink of health. Just before we left for our month-long trip, Brando, my longhaired mini-dachshund god-dog (yes, I’m referred to as his “Auntie Mom”) suffered from a nasty back problem and had to get an emergency operation. It was heart-wrenching […]
We all have bad days at work. You know what I mean. Days filled dealing with self-serving, obtuse lunkheads whom you’d rather be smacking in the back of the head with a baguette rather than working with. Days filled with interminably long meetings going nowhere that make a 10 hour layover in Los Angeles […]
There are some dishes that are made to impress — miniature towers of painstakingly cooked and elaborately presented food that look as delicate and complex as they can sometimes taste. You’ll find such dishes in many fancy restaurants, the ones with managers who like to make you wait for your table, designer chairs that […]
For several months, friends have been telling me that I simply have to check out Wine Garage, the contemporary American wine bar and restaurant in Singapore owned by the same guys that started Brewerkz (and conveniently located just next door). One friend raved about their steak tartar. “It’s the best in Singapore,” she gushed. […]
A little while back, I wrote about using ColorVision’s Spyder2 system. In that post, I mentioned I would be working with Cathay Photo, my favourite Singapore-based camera store, to help publicize this cool color management system. Well, here’s just one way we’re hoping to grab your attention… AND also get you involved. Plus, we’re giving […]
For some, water is water and drinking bottled water is for dandies and posers. But water isn’t always water because sometimes water can be dirty, polluted and drinking it can send you to the porcelain throne for way too long and too often. At home, my wife S and I have been drinking tap […]
It’s always nice to discover new places run by young, talented and passionate local chefs. This past week, I’ve had the immense pleasure of dining at two such establishments. The first is Macaron, an innovative “dessert restaurant” owned by the very well-known Les Amis group. The second is The Universal, a smart and cool Modern […]
A few weeks ago, I wrote that some of the very best food that my wife S and I ate while visiting California on our recent trip were a number of fish tacos. Truth be told, devouring this deceptively simple but delicious dish was no accident. Because we were going to be in […]
Because I get emailed this question pretty often, I thought I'd share what camera gear I use. My current favourite camera is the new Panasonic Lumix GF1. With it, I've been using the 20mm 1:1.7, the Leica 45mm 1:2.8, and the 7-14mm 1:4.0. The Leica 45mm especially is an amazing lens that pairs superbly with this amazing new system.
