Friday Food Porn: Kakigori (shaved ice) with kuromitsu in Kyoto

Nothing beats a shaved ice dessert on a hot day. The gorgeous dessert pictured here is from a cool cafe in Arashiyama, Kyoto, Japan. My wife S and I are presently in Japan – taking a week’s break from Singapore. Little did we realize that Kyoto, at this time of year, is hotter than our little tropical island home. On Wednesday, we found ourselves with about three hours to kill before we could check into our hotel in the scenic neighborhood of Arashiyama. After lunch, we walked over to Sagano-Yu, a very cool cafe that sits in what used to be a public bathhouse. The kakigori with kuromitsu (Japanese black honey) that I slurped down was the perfect antitode for what is definitely one of the hottest afternoons I’ve experienced in recent memory.
